Top Secret Greek

I hesitate to share this secret, but I can’t live with myself not telling you. Mr. D’s is the standard by which I measure all other gyro meat. It is the best, not only in Seattle, but everywhere else I’ve ever eaten gyros. When friends are in town and we take them to Pike Place Market. (For those of you not in “the know’ it’s Pike Place Market - not PikeS Place or Pike Market. Repeat after me Pike Place Market. Good.) So, I use to eat my way from one end of the Market to the other with friends, stopping for everything delicious foodie shop along the way. On the far north end was Turkish delight, then pork humbow and pastries at 3 Girls Bakery. There was fresh fruit and chocolate covered nuts, smoked salmon and mini donuts, but we always had our actual meal at Mr. D’s. If you could find a seat during the crowded tourist season great, but if not no biggie, you could walked through the Market as you ate your gyro shopping, talking, and people watching. The spices in the lamb/beef mix are perfect. The tzatziki sauce is fresh and the veggies always crisp. Eventually I stopped eating bread and sugar and ate more meat so I gave up the pasteries, donuts and Turkish delight.

I loved the meats flavor so much I asked if I could have some extra meat in my gyro. “How much?” Elyanna asked. Hmmm. Good question. How much could I have? “$2, $3” She answered, sounding like the Seinfeld Soup Guy. Excellent, I took $3 extra meat every time from then on. This could almost be the end of the story. But it’s not. More hesitation at sharing this even bigger secret. I am 90% carnivore. That’s not the secret. I’ll explain that more in my HEALTH posts but basically I eat mostly meat. Occasionally cream in my coffee or asparagus with my steak. So although the lettuce, tomato and onion on the gyro are delicious, I don’t eat them and that got me thinking even more about meat. Could I just get the meat??? Turns out I could. “How much? she asked me again” How much can I have? I asked her back. “1 pound, 2 pounds?” She answered . Oh, we’re talking in pounds now, I liked the sound of that. I’ll take 2 pounds, I settled on that the first time. Needless to say I order much more now, calling a day in advance, only coming down after the lunch crowd rush is over, I slowly cruise through the street (Pike Pl. - remember) full of people taking selfies and gawking in every direction. I slowly creep into a parking place (or loading zone right in front of Mr. D’s - I am loading gyro meat after all). I grab the meat - hot and sealed, packaged to travel. I always ask for a side container and a fork for the ride home because who can drive with amazing food smells just out of reach. It took me a few trips to figure that out. I zip back to our little lake, divvy up the score into smaller bags which I freeze to eat later or share with friends. I don’t know if this is how it works for everyone, so you didn’t hear it from me, but when it comes to the best gyro meat evah - I gotta guy.
