Good Job Mom

I recently had three 11 year olds show up in my yard to play. I loved it! Their parents were busy working in the yard and said the twins and their cousin could play in the cul-de-sac, so the kids took that to mean our house as well. We have been friends since they were in kindergarten and it’s understood that they are always welcome at our house.

I could hear them before I could see them. They were laughing and playing in the yard as I came out and they all three shouted, “Jen!” Knowing I’d be just as happy to see them.

We talked for a few minutes about the latest road trip they took and I got the guinea pig update before offering them the giant pack of bubble wands and gallon of bubble solution that had just arrived from Amazon.

They leapt at the chance to blow huge bubbles with the dinner plate size wands and went about blowing, chasing and popping bubbles for the next 30 minutes. When their mom called from a few yards over they all hopped up to gather their jackets and flip-flops, but just as they were about to head home, one of the girls said, “Wait, we have to pick up.”

Immediately they all three turned to gather up the wands and put them back in the box, poured the left over bubble solution back in the bottle and said, “Thanks Jen!” Before waving good bye over their shoulders.

“Bye, you guys. Tell your mom I said hi!” I yelled back as they disappeared around the corner. And tell her she’s doing a great job raising you I thought. I’d tell her that myself the next day when we met for a walk. She shrugged it off, but I insisted it was a really wonderful thing she was doing raising kind, respectful and responsible kids. Not easy but really wonderful.
